Garelochhead (after the Helensburgh turn-offs). This takes you onto ‘the haul road’ built to haul materials for the building of Faslane. This picturesque road goes through Glen Fruin, and has been voted one of the countries favourite roads by motorists.
(For more about the A817, see this article in the Glasgow Herald.)
FROM THE NORTH
Coming from a northerly direction on the A82,

- The top road to Coulport
you turn right at Tarbert then follow the road to Arrochar. Here you turn left onto the A814, and follow the twisting and turning road along the eastern shore of Loch Long until it gets to the Whistlefield roundabout just above Garelochhead.
ON THE PENINSULA
The B833 runs along the shore all the way around the Peninsula, which is also crossed by Peaton Hill, and also by the military road from Whistlefield to Coulport. This MOD road, which can be used by the public, has spectacular views of the Gareloch, Loch Long and down the Clyde estuary.
