Peaton Hill Nature Reserve
The site has a range of different habitats which has resulted in a wide range of plants and animals. There is a particularly healthy bird list with species of conservation concern utilising the reserve such as Hen Harrier, Black Grouse and Grasshopper Warbler. Amphibians are well represented and the site supports good populations of Toads, Common Frogs and Smooth Newts. A full biological survey will be conducted over the next few years which will produce an inventory of the reserve and will act as a useful conservation and management tool.
The reserve is currenty open to the public and dogwalkers, and on your visit you will often find through the months members of the committee and volunteers lending a hand to improve the pathways and tracks.
Background
The Peaton Hill Community Nature Reserve was initially launched in 2004. The concept of a MOD Community Nature Reserve was developed during an annual MOD Biodiversity event which saw high ranking personnel from a variety of agencies, all with a vested interest in conservation, contribute their time and effort to producing the framework of a local community nature resrve.
The MOD's achievement in transforming what was a forgotten piece of wasteland into a thriving home for wildlife was formally recognised when it was awarded the 2009 Sanctuary Silver Otter award for Environmental Projects.
