Getting there

Despite its apparent remoteness, the Peninsula is actually very accessible, whether by land or sea. From Glasgow, these are the main ways to get there:

Public transport

half-hourly train services from Glasgow Queen Street Station to Helensburgh, then the 316 bus to Garelochhead and the Peninsula
regular train service from Glasgow Central Station to Gourock, then by ferry to Kilcreggan
train (West Highland line) from Glasgow Queen Street to Garelochhead, using the Oban service or Fort William/Mallaig service (two trains each day)

From Glasgow

EITHER: A82
OR: M8/Erskine Bridge/A82 (this option for travel from Glasgow International Airport)

From the A82

EITHER: Turn off at Dumbarton towards Cardross and Helensburgh. From Helensburgh follow the A814 towards Garelochhead where you join the B833, the Peninsula's shore-side road
OR:Follow the A82 to Loch Lomond and proceed along beside the Loch until the sign for Garelochhead from where a left turn takes you onto the A817 and the scenic route through Glen Fruin. This road meets the A814 above Garelochhead. Turning right here, you can reach Garelochhead and the Peninsula from the next roundabout. From the roundabout:
- EITHER: Turn left to go down towards Garelochhead and the B833
- OR: Go straight ahead onto the M.O.D. road signposted for Coulport taking you along the spine of the Peninsula. Bypass Coulport by taking the small side road left before the steep downhill descent. From this road you can turn left to go down to the Gareloch shore or right to reach the Loch Long shore. Either way there is a steep descent down to the B833.

From the North

The A814 may be taken at Arrochar, or the A82 to the south of Luss, on Loch Lomond side, then right by link road to A814 at Garelochhead. See 'From the A82' above.

Travelling by ferry

Clyde Marine Motoring run a frequent passenger service all year to link Kilcreggan, Gourock and Helensburgh.

From Gourock, CALMAC ferry may be taken to Dunoon.
