Hi...I am trying to trace my fathers mother (Rodina Anderson Robertson) who was born in 1917 and died in 1946. I have no birth or death certs but am told by an elderly relative that her family before moving to Glasgow around the 1920s lived in Rosneath, Gareloch. Her father was said to be in the merchant navy but originated from Skye. She married my grandfather John Norman Young but this was after moving to Glasgow. Sorry not alot to go on but if anyone has any information i would be grateful....John Young (grandson)

Hi Amansco,
I lived in Aitkrnshaw Cottage, Rahane from about 1939 to 1959, I worked with my dad as a house painter for the last four years we were there, we did work on a house at Mambeg, which had been bought by the Rev. Thomas Lowe who at the time was the army padre at the Faslane base just after the war, the base was later taken over by Metal Industries.
The house was later sold to a retired army officer whose name I can't remember, but he had a male nurse by the name of Willie Baird looking after him because of his injuries sustaine in the war.

Thanks Macbill. As a child I spent many months at a time at the house that was known then as Mambeg Pier (now Pier House). I have such happy memories and it is probably down to that, that I decided to buy a caravan on the Peninsula as I just love the area. The person who owned the house was a work colleague of my Fathers.  He did work for the Commander at Faslane Submarine base. In return my Dad's work colleague was given permission to go over to the base for diesel for his boat which my father did on many occasion while on holiday. Somehow I don't think that kind of arrangement would happen now - can you imagine?? In those days there weren't any police boats and the Peace Camp wasn't there either - how things have changed. Incidentally I never did get my bench or table back. I guess nowhere is immune from petty crime.

I am glad to hear that another supermarket is coming to Helensburgh, maybe we will see the Co-op and Tesco Metro prices being a bit more realistic.  I will still shop at the local shops and only use supermarkets - once a week.

Is this true? I've not heard of this happening as of yet, are there any details of what site they intend using?

If it is true i dont think it need be seen as another threat to our local shops... personally i aim for a balance of that what i can buy in bulk from a supermarket and then use the local stores for day to day items and a more personal service if that makes sense.

I hadn't heard this before. As the family food shopper, I am of course interested, but also I would hate to lose our local convenience stores on the Peninsula. They already are being adversely affected by supermarket deliveries to the Peninsula villages. And keeping the kitchen running would definitely suffer if they were not there.

Sainsbury are to open a new store soon in Helensburgh. It is possible that they may offer online shopping beyong Helensburgh if there is demand.

The following flowers are growing wild locally.

These are about 2 foot tall and the yellow hooded petal is about 10" high.

There are 3 clumps that I can see but there may be more in the area.
I am not sure if they are wild or something that have been dumped from a formal garden, but they do seem to be thriving in very wet conditions.
