:-* I have traced my wife's ancestors back to Walter Cumming (c1665-1746) who was her Great x 5 Grandfather. Walter Cumming purchased the Barremman Estate, Gareloch in 1704. According to documents in Helensburgh - "Indweller in the Clachan of Rosneath of the date 13th March 1706 in return for a certain some of money, as the full and adequate pryce of the lands aforesaid. The lands of Clandearg (Cylinder) and Boreman and so forth..in the Blue Book listed as 597acres..." In 1745 Walter wrote a will leaving the Estate to his eldest son Patrick and sums of money to his 2 daughters. The estate was subject to an entail male, which required the Estate to be passed on to the first born surviving male child in perpetuity. The Estate was passed down accordingly from Walter Cumming (c1665-c1746) > Patrick Cumming (1696-1770) > Patrick Cumming (1731-1798) > Dougald Cumming (1738-1839) > Robert Crawford Cummng 1808-1876). Robert Crawford Cumming had 2 daughters and no son and sold the Estate, some say illegally, to Robert Thom (1825-1911) around 1865. Robert Thom built the second pier at Clynder (now demolished). On the estate a simple white washed stone double story house still.stands with its impressive out buildings. Built around 1730, it was referred to as the old mansion. It was a very simple rough cast house. The lower portion having been originally built with unhewn stones taken from the shore interspersed with clay, and had a thatched roof (now of slate). Over the door the following names are cut in the stone "Patrick Cuming 1730 Mary McFarlane". This inscription refers to Walter Cumming's son Patrick and his wife Mary McFarlane, to whom he was married on the 1st November 1716 in Luss, Loch Lomand. Gravestones can be found in the Barremman Buriel Ground, Rosneath Old Churchyard for both Patricks, Dougald, Robert Crawford Cumming and their spouces. I would be interested if anyone has any further information on the Cumming families of Rosneath or on the Barremman Estate. John Tomalin
