Metal Industries

Hi There,
When I was a kid growing up in Gourock, I remember watching
a large passenger liner being towed into the Gareloch, presumably
to be broken up. I was probably about 4 or 5 at the time, which would put the date around 1950/51. As far as I remember, she
had 3 possibly 4 funnels which from memory were painted light
blue with black toppings.
Where could I find out a list of ships broken up by Metal
Industries around that time, or does anyone local remember
such a vessel being brought in then ??
Thanks/ Neil

Hi Neil,
I used to live in Rahane just across from Faslane where the breakers yard "Metal Industries" was. The ship you are asking about was the Aquitania, I remember going on board with my Dad where he purchased a wardrobe and dressing table which ere beautifully made from solid oak. It was a four funnel cruise ship built by John Brown of Clydebank, around about 1914 and at that time the largest ship ever built. Not sure where you can get a list of ships broken up by "Metal Industries" but I think they were owned by the British Iron & Steel Corporation.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

I remember when HMS Vanguard was being broken up.

After that there were many ships, or differing sizes, and it was possible to buy bits and pieces off them, and sometimes there was a rush when a "new" one came in.  I bought various sailing bits and pieces, mostly off the lifeboats.

I lived at faslane Cottage (not there anymore) and my mum used to work at metal industries.  I too would like a list of ships if anybody is successful.

also i remember her telling me of a ship that was used in a film and she was one of the extras.  i will get the film name and post it.

I would bet that the film was "A night to remember' it was about the Titanic sinking and was the one Kenneth More starred.
